Passed away at the age of 93 Atal Bihari Vajpayee is the most celebrated Prime Minister in India. Rising above all the odds he served the country thrice as PM during which the country had seen substantial growth and transformation. His straight forward attitude, leadership qualities and decision making capabilities are no match even to this day. Not just in India but he was appreciated for his qualities across the globe but, have you ever wondered what made him stand apart amongst the rest of the modern day leaders today. Here are few things you need to know about Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
1. India becomes a Nuclear State.
Despite being highly condemned by westerners Atal bihari Vajpayee successfully made India a nuclear power in 1998. The Pokhran- II also known as Operation shakti - 98 was carried under his term where in India as secretly conducted test of Fusion bomb with Fission bomb.
2. Telecom Growth in India
During 1989 - 1999 the telecom growth in India was just 0.6% this is a decade after Rajiv Gandhi left the PM office. The telecom sector saw a rapid change as soon as BJP introduced the (NTP) New teleocm Policy that gave the entire sector market penetration from 3% in 1999 to 70% until 2012.
3. Education for Every One
Atal Bihari Vajpayee revolutionized the Indian Education system by laying the foundation of Sarva Sikhsha Abhiyan (Education for Every One). This was programme was very successful and popular. It also contributed to the growth in Indias GDP. The programme aims to improve human capability by providing community owned quality education in time bound manner.
4. Focused on Improving Relationship with Other Countries
During in terms Atal Bihari Vajpayee was keen on developing and maintaining healthy relation with foreign countries the list is quite long but we will try to highlight few here.
1. After Jimmy Carter Bill Clinton became the first US president to visit India in 2000. It is due to this we have a strong bond with the US until today.
2. He succeeded in earning military and strategic cooperation with Israel.
3. As a peace gesture he was first amongst the passengers to travel from Delhi to Lahore through Delhi - Lahore bus service.
5. A Tough Leader During Touch Times.
Vajpayees was no easy job its was during his rule India had to go through catastrophic situations like Kargil War 1999, Two massive cyclones in year 1999 and 2000, 2001 Earthquake, worst drought witnessed ever in 2002-03,oil crisis and Gulf War II was no exception either the last was the terrifying parliament attack. Despite all the above Atal Bihari Vajpayee stood by the nation and with this strong decision making capability did not let Indias GDP and economy fall.
6. Delhi Metro
We surely enjoy to travel through Metro today and it does save us lot of time and traffic but do you know the Metro project was first approved by Vajpayee led Government. Delhi Metros first section between Shahdara to Tis Hazari war inaugurated by Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 24th December 2002.
7. India on Moon with Chandrayan - I
Our Country is now ready to fly high in the field of science. I a pleased I am pleased to announce that India will send her spacecraft to the moon by 2008. Its being name by Chandrayan- I. Vajpayee said addressing the nation on 56th Independence Day 2003.
8. National Highway Development Projects
In order to improve and develop the highways of India Vajpayee unveiled the (NHDP) National Highway Development Project for world class highways network within the country. NHDP constructed a total of 46,260 kms of highways and roads.
9. Introduction of new Ministries
During his rule Atal ji worked towards the development of the tribal by introducing the The Minitry of Tribal Affairs, Social Welfare Ministry was converted to Ministry of Social Justice and also opened Department of North - East Region.
Apart from being a strong political and social leader Atal Bihar Vajpayee was also a renowned poet and fierce speaker. Even today after his death people look up to him as an inspirational idol and crave for his videos which are available of social media. His birthday falls on 25 December and is now celebrated as Good Governance Day on 2014 the Indian Government has awarded him with Bharat Ratna.
