First Gay Marriage in India at Yavatmal Maharashtra

40 Year old Harshi who has completed his engineering from IIT – Mumbai entered a gay marriage with his Vietnamese boyfriend Vinh.

The couple married at Yavatmal in typical Maharashtrian style with proper vedic hymns . Harshi Sathawane an NRI and lives in California, this IIT graduate met his boyfriend Vinh through online dating.

The marriage took place on 30 December before Supreme Courts decision to review IPC Section – 377, which do not legalize homosexuality. 


The couple first meet in Oct 2016. In April 2017 Harshi and Vinh decided to get engaged. The flew all the way from California to Yavatmal in Maharashtra book a hotel for the venue.  According to reports wedding had 70-80 guest including 10 gay couples.

Wedding Day

Harshi’s sexuality was reveled to his parents in 1997. It was hard for them to accept it as being gay is a big taboo in Indian civil society, it took Harshi 5 long years to convince his parents.

After lot of persuasion  Mohan Kumar father of Harshi agreed to this marriage with Vinh but Harsh’s mother did not attend the wedding ceremony according to some reports.

Without revealing any futher details Kumar said that Harshi left for California after wedding.

Gay Marriages in India

With the couples wedding photos going viral around Yavatmal the Additional suprentendent of Police Amar Singh Jadhav ordered an investigation in this matter.

Cops were being asked to submit reports before him.  Honorable SC  is still in a procedure of re-examining on homosexuality constituting  a five member bench as of today Gay marriage is Illegal in India.
