Abhijit Mukherjee, son of Pranab Mukherjee confirmed his demise on Twitter," With a Heavy Heart, this is to inform you that mu father Shri Pranab Mukherjj has just passed away in spite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital & prayers, duas & prathanas from people throughout India. I thank all of you with folded hands ".
In his 5 decades of the political carrier, Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee handled a wide array of cabinets post from the defense, home, finance. He also served as the President of India from 2012 to 2017.
After serving as President for 5 years and growing health concerns he had to step down from his political and refused to contest elections.
This month on 10th August Mukherjee was admitted to the army hospital where he had to undergo surgery to remove a clot in his bran. He had also tested positive for COVID-19 in the hospital," On a visit to the hospital for a separate procedure, I have tested positive for COVID-19 today. I request the people who came in contact with me in the last week, to please self-isolate and get tested for COVID-19," he had posted.
He has also developed renal dysfunction and renal infection according to the hospital.
He attended every Durga in his home town Mirati, Birbhum District where he originally hailed from. In 2008 he was honored with Padma Vibhushan which is India's second-highest civilian award followed by Bharat Ratna in 2019 which is India's highest civilian award.
