What is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence or AI is nothing but the science of building smart machines that can perform tasks that require the involvement of human brains. A few examples of the application of AI include speech recognition, planning, learning and problem solving. To make it simpler, let us give you a few everyday-examples. If you are a user of Windows 10, you must be familiar with the way Cortana helps you to use the various applications in your computer. You may also be a user of Amazon’s Alexa and must be receiving tagging suggestions on Facebook. These are nothing but examples of Artificial Intelligence.
So now that you have got the hang of what it is, you must be curious to know how it works.
The first seeds of Machine Learning were probably laid in the papers of Alan Turing on Computing Machinery and Intelligence. He was the first to ask the question whether machines can think. Turing Test, which followed, helped in establishing the vision and goal of AI. Later, Norvig and Russell explored the approaches like thinking rationally, thinking like a human, acting rationally and acting like a human. The works of the likes of Patrick Winston, the professor from MIT,further enhanced the concept of AI and helped in its expansion.
We hear a number of terms related to AI in our everyday life but fail to understand the meanings of most of them. So, let us quickly educate ourselves with some of these terms-
Machine Learning- The terms AI and Machine Learning are closely used with each other. Machine Learning is actually an application of AI which allows the computer systems to learn from the past experience and work or react like human brain without being separately programmed for the same.
Deep Learning- Deep learning is a type of Machine Learning that involves the application of artificial neural networks which learn through the processing of data. These networks imitate the biological networks found in human brain.
Neural Networks- The neural networks help in Deep Learning. These are basically computer systems that have been modeled according to the neural connections in the brain. Just like there are neurons in the neural networks, perceptions are found in the artificial neural network.
Cognitive Computing-This is another important part of AI which helps in copying and improving the way humans and machines interact. Here the human thought process is recreated in a computer. This involves the understanding of the meanings of images and human language.
Natural Language Processing-It allows the computer to identify and produce human speech and language. Its ultimate aim is to allow proper interaction among machines and understand human language and produce logical responses to it.
Computer Vision-This technique helps in the implementation of pattern identification and deep learning for the interpretation of the content of any image. This includes graphs, data charts and pictures within PDFs. It helps the computer to interpret visual data and identify the process.
Internet of Things-It is a network of devices connected to the internet. This is an emerging technology which is expected to connect billions of devices in the years to come.
Equipped with all these technologies, AI continues to evolve and usher in revolutions in every sphere of our life.
In case of Strong AI, the machines can execute their tasks autonomously while in case of weak AI, they depend on human interface for the same.
